Having never never played X-COM before, I'm treating the game as its own thing, unrelated to the series.

If you're a fan of X-COM, you already view this game as an insult, so you can skip it. But if you're not, you'll certainly get some enjoyment out of it. It's a mindless slaughterfest with great music, a variety of weapons and power-ups, 40 unique levels, a variety of dangerous alien foes, and a very simple story. If you liked Serious Sam and Will Rock, then this game should be right up your alley. The year is 1999, and our little blue planet is under attack by hostile alien forces. Deep in the Nevada desert, Prof. Able Standard is working on his solution to deal with the alien menace: the combat robot, the "Enforcer." You play as the titular Enforcer, blasting alien baddies across 40 different levels to reach the source of the invading menace and save the human race with the help of your creator, Prof. Standard.
